Dermaplaning is an exfoliation procedure that involves using a scalpel-like single blade to shave the top layer of your skin, thereby removing all dead skin cells, dirt, peach fuzz, and fine wrinkles. It is basically like shaving your face and the procedure is usually done in a spa by a trained dermatologist. Dermaplaning became popular recently and social media mainly because it makes your face smoother and several beauty influencers became interested.

There are a lot of discussions as to whether the procedure is healthy and safe. There is also the question that can you put on makeup after dermaplaning procedure. This article will help to clear up some of these questions.

The obvious and simple result of dermaplaning is smoother skin. Now, results can vary for different people, but essentially after a dermaplaning appointment, your skin is smoother, peach fuzz-free, more even tones and sometimes a little lighter than it previously was. Your skin is expected to look beautiful and radiant.

SAFETY, SIDE EFFECTS AND SKIN TYPES FOR DERMAPLANING.

The procedure is pretty safe if done by a certified dermatologist and it has little to no side effects. Dermaplaning is an alternative to chemical procedures like face peeling.

Dermaplaning can be used for almost any skin type such as dry skin, dull skin, fine lines, acne scars, sun-damaged skins, etc. People with highly sensitive and reactive skin are advised to refrain from dermaplaning as it might irritate their skin. People with cold sores, infections or active acne should also avoid dermaplaning as it can lead to the spread of potential viruses or bacteria which could further lead to inflammation, worse infections and scarring. Other people who should refrain from dermaplaning are people with oily skin, sunburn and tans. If you undergo dermaplaning with someone who is not professional, you can end up having nicks and scrapes on your face. Once the procedure is done, you should stay out of the sun, places with extreme heat, chlorine and any exfoliators for at least 2 days.

PROCESS

The process of dermaplaning is not painful despite the thought or fear of a blade scraping on your skin. The process is painless, but that is why we recommend going to a professional dermatologist. Some people request slight anesthetics but it is only in special cases. The process is the same as shaving your face, except it is done with a medical-grade surgical knife at a 45-degree angle by a professional.

USE OF PRODUCTS AND MAKEUP

Generally, dermaplaning and makeup go hand in hand. This is because your skin is smoother and so, facial products are absorbed into your skin faster. It also means that the make-up sets and glides on your skin very easily because of the new texture. Your face will be more vulnerable to sunlight after a dermaplaning appointment so make sure to use your sunscreen (a mild one) and other skincare products diligently. Because dermaplaning is not a life-risking procedure, you do not have long recovery times. At most, you can wait a few minutes before continuing with your everyday life. For use of makeup, however, it is recommended that you wait for at least 24 to 48 hours before using make-up products on your face after an appointment. You should refrain from the use of any topical products for those following 48 hours. If there is a necessity for you, you could use foundation and powder immediately after but because the barrier of your skin is more open, you are more likely to have skin irritations.

FREQUENCY OF DERMAPLANING APPOINTMENTS

You should only have dermaplaning appointments about every 4 -6 weeks. For more sensitive skin types, you can wait every few months depending on how good your skin is doing. You can consult a dermatologist for professional advice.

At the end of the day, if you do not have particularly sensitive skin, you are safe to book a dermaplaning appointment. You can also continue to use your makeup afterwards, but remember to wait at least 48 hours so that your freshly opened pores are not instantly clogged up with makeup products.
